Renate Schubert is Professor for Economics at ETH Zurich. She got her Dr. rer. pol. in Tübingen and did her habilitation at the Technical University Darmstadt. For a long time there were few if any women at ETH. However, throughout its year history, female trailblazers have repeatedly shattered the glass ceiling at ETH — with tenacity, knowledge and, occasionally, a bit of humour. They have achieved a great deal, but there is still much work to be done when it comes to providing equal opportunities for women. This statement was written by Anna Schinz-Mousson on 29 May and addressed to the rector of ETH Zurich at the time.
After all, ETH, which had been founded nearly 70 years earlier, had expressly welcomed female students from day one. It is hard for us to imagine today. In the meantime, we take it for granted that women study, research and teach at ETH. But it took a long time to get to this point: the first female student at ETH registered 16 years after the university was founded in , and years passed before the first full female professor was appointed to a chair.
And we still have a long way to go:. In recent years, we have been able to make some progress in terms of hiring female professors. Since , around 30 percent of our new hires have been women. But we understand that we still have a lot of work to do until both genders are represented equally across all levels of the hierarchy.

Towards that end, the ETH Zurich should create an innovation platform on both campuses, which inspire society to rethink their beliefs. Generating suggestions leads to continuous improvement at ETH Zurich. Specifically, we are looking at resource protection, closing material flows, and making careful use of all types of energy. In addition, I try to make sure that the boundary conditions are set so that ideas and concepts which are developed at ETH Zurich can also be directly implemented on our campus.

This interdisciplinary project examines the interaction between physical learning spaces and the university students that use those spaces. The project focus is on informal learning spaces across various learning settings. Our definition of informal learning spaces draws on the distinction in the learning sciences literature between formal and informal learning.
We define informal learning spaces as spaces where students typically combine learning with other activities, such as eating, drinking and socialising. This is in contrast to formal learning spaces which are primarily designed for learning, such as classrooms, seminar rooms etc. Although the need for high quality informal learning spaces is acknowledged, there is little knowledge about the characteristics of such spaces.
We focus on how students use and experience informal learning spaces. This is done through empirical research student surveys, behavioural observations, behavioural experiments , and through drawing. We also examine the effect of the design of the space on student behaviour empirically in a setting. Axonometry by Chair of Architectural Behaviorology, student assistant Tanguy Caversaccio.
